A Love of Music

Part of the reason we do so much cuddling in our classes is to ensure a loving environment. We, as parents, will take any reason to shower love on our children, but if we are sure to help children feel safe, secure, and loved while making, listening to, and moving to music those feeling will be associated with music.

When I was growing up my family used to sit around the piano and sing on Sunday evenings. This was a special time because all the other demands of the day were put on hold so we could spend time as a family. When I left home, I would often get homesick. The only things that seemed to help was playing the piano and singing by myself. My roommates and friends started to sing with me and the friendships we had were strengthened (in my mind at least) by the fact that it was around a piano with song.

That is what I hope music can be for my son, a safe place where feelings of love are present. Of course, I'd love for him to be musically talented, but I'm convinced that if he always feels love in association to music, he will love it back, and therefore be willing to practice and the talent will grow.
